Toggle the Design Tool on and off using the Design Tool in the Design and Layout tab.

When you open the tool up, you will see a panel appear at the bottom of the page.

Click anywhere on the page to select the part of the page you want to alter. The part of the page you have selected will be highlighted in a bright yellow green color. The panel will provide information about exactly which page element you have selected. In the example it says "Widget in Header inner in Body". This means every widget in the header will be affected by any changes you make.

You can click on the tab marked 'Background', and then select 'Background color' to change the background color. A popup color picker will let you change the background color of the page element you selected. You can immediately see the effect of your changes.

You can click on the tab marked 'Font', and then select 'font family' to change the font. The highlight will show you what element you are going to alter. In this example all headings will get a new font.

You can click the button in the upper left corner of the panel to shrink it out of the way to see the effect of the changes you have made.

You can click a button in the lower right corner of the panel to see a list of all the changes you have made. Click on the 'x' next to each one to remove that change. Remove all the changes to return to the design you started with.

When you are happy with what you have you can give your style a name and save it. You can choose either to save it but not publish the changes (only you will see them) or publish the changes (everyone will see them).

It may help you to understand how your page is designed so you can find and select the right elements to design. The page is made up of several layers, many overlapping each other. If you try to apply a color to a layer on the bottom, you may see no effect because other parts of the page cover it up. You will probably find you have to experiment with the tool to get the result that you want.
